Affective Education is based on the idea that we can design education systems where everyone will be successful if we begin with that policy. It is in contrast with competitive education where there has to be winners and losers because we start out with that alternative policy. Competitive education is devastating for those who end up on the wrong side of the proverbial bell curve. It destroys intitiative. This is especially true for children and youth who have not reached the maturity to fully comprehend the nature of competition. WALTER SMITH

Experts Lois Holzman, Ph.D. Lois Holzman, Ph.D., is the director of the East Side Institute, an international training and research center for new approaches to therapeutics, education and community building; and a founder of the biennial Performing the World conference, which brings together practitioners, scholars, researchers and activists for whom theatrical performance and the creative arts are essential for personal and social transformation. With colleague Fred Newman, the late public philosopher and founder of social therapy, Holzman has advanced social therapeutics, a “psychology of becoming” that incorporates play, performance and practical philosophy to inspire life-long human development through group creativity. Her texts, Vygotsky at Work and Play (Holzman) and Lev Vygotsky Revolutionary Scientist, (Newman and Holzman) have introduced psychologists, educators and helping professionals the world over to an activist-take on the methodological writings of psychologist Lev Vygotsky.

http://www.getlocal.coop/ Our mission is to restore confidence to Irish communities by developing community supported enterprises, which will increase resilience and retained wealth in the local economy. Our experiences have shown that too often, worthy community-led projects fail as members run out of energy and resources to support them. For this reason we wanted to build a team that would explore ways to affect change while being able to earn a living from it.
